The Discovery of the Master antioxidant Glutathione - Glutone

Known as ‘Philothion’ initially to being popularly known as Glutathione, this molecule has a journey of its own. As heavy as the name sounds similar is its strength of multitasking. From being an indispensable part of our most fundamental unit ie. Human cells, to being the mother of all antioxidants – Glutathione is unique. Right from skin brightening, detoxification, enhancing stamina and immunity, and tackling oxidative stress, Glutathione just proves it’s the best antioxidant we have in our body. And not to forget the beauty with which it recreates itself…It's just mind-boggling!

Have you ever wondered what glutathione really means, it does sound like a difficult-to-pronounce name of some sort of a drug or a chemical… hey… but hold on. It's not! Discovered by de Rey-Paihade in 1888, it was termed as ‘Philothion’ meaning “love of sulfur” in Greek. He had extracted it from yeasts and many more animal tissues and from fresh egg whites.

Frederick G. Hopkins

Later in 1921, Frederick G. Hopkins suggested Philothion be a dipeptide containing glutamate (Glu) and Cys from yeast and animal tissues. Honoring the discovery of Philothion, Hopkins named it ‘Glutathione’.

Later there were many speculations around the structure of Glutathione making it a topic of interest for many scientists and researchers. Ultimately, in 1929, Hopkins redetermined that Glutathione was a tripeptide containing Glutamate, Cysteine, and Glycine (Gly).

Glutathione

As evident, Glutathione inspired the interest of some of the most prominent researchers of the early twentieth century. More than 130 years after its discovery, Glutathione is still a promising molecule due to its extremely versatile applications.

Glutathione is found in surprisingly high levels of 5-millimolar concentrations in most cells. This is the same concentration in cells as of glucose, potassium, and cholesterol! Available in two forms Reduced or L- Glutathione and Oxidized Glutathione, always look for the reduced form in the labels. The reason being the more the amount of reduced Glutathione the better efficacy it has in tackling toxins and eliminating them from the body. With most of its concentration found in the liver to help in the detoxification process glutathione levels are key to an individual’s health. Not surprisingly, over 80,000 published studies have shown that glutathione plays a central role in good health:

  • High glutathione levels appear to be associated with a long lifespan.
  • Higher levels of glutathione and/or higher dietary intake of glutathione are associated with healthier heart, eyes, colon, and skin health.
  • Among older individuals, higher glutathione status appears to be associated with multiple measures of good health, including cholesterol, body mass index, blood pressure, blood sugar, and self-ratings of overall health.

When it comes to our outer protective layer which is the SKIN, Glutathione levels are key to its glow and radiance. Glutathione depletion has been strongly associated with various skin-related issues like pigmentation, dull skin, uneven skin tone, and loss of glow and radiance. Also, lifestyle habits like smoking, consuming alcohol, too much stress, and sleepless nights worsen the situation by further lowering Glutathione levels. Our bodies obtain glutathione in two ways: from the foods we eat and from our own internal production. Under some conditions, though, the body's need for glutathione is outpaced by its ability to produce it.
